How to remove mold from jackets and prevent it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I'm worried it's from mold. I just pulled out our leather winter jackets from the back of the bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment and found them covered in fuzzy black spots. This closet is on an interior wall and it's been so humid the last few months. What's the best way to clean the jackets and, more importantly, how can I stop this from happening again in our closets?

First, clean the jackets outdoors to avoid spreading spores indoors. For leather, wipe the mold off with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, using a soft, damp cloth. Dry the jacket completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area—never in direct sunlight, as it can damage the leather. Once dry, treat it with a leather conditioner. Do not use bleach, as it can ruin the material.
The mold on your jackets is a strong indicator of a humidity problem within that closet and likely the entire room. In Dubai's climate, interior closets on outside walls are particularly prone to condensation due to the constant contrast between the hot, humid outdoor air and the cold air from AC units. This creates a perfect environment for mold growth on organic materials like leather, cotton, and wool. To prevent recurrence, you must control the moisture. Start by leaving the closet doors slightly ajar to improve air circulation. Consider using a small, standalone dehumidifier or a renewable desiccant like silica gel packets inside the closet. Ensure your apartment's AC is serviced and draining correctly, as a faulty unit can contribute to high indoor humidity. For a more permanent solution, have a professional assess the room's ventilation; they may recommend installing a small ventilation grill in the closet door or wall to allow air from the AC to circulate. Since your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms, the mold in the closet could be part of a larger issue. It is advisable to have a professional indoor environmental assessment, which includes air and surface sampling sent to a microbiology lab. This will identify the mold species and spore concentration levels throughout your apartment, providing a clear picture of the problem and the necessary remediation steps to ensure your family's health. |
