Can I clean black mold behind my toilet myself?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in my Mirdif villa has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just found a patch of black and green mold spreading behind the toilet where it meets the floor. It's been so humid lately, even with the AC running constantly. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it properly?

It depends on the size and type of mold. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can likely handle it yourself. In Dubai's high humidity, bathrooms are prone to condensation, especially behind toilets and under sinks where airflow is poor.

For a DIY clean, skip the bleach. It's mostly water and can feed mold deeper in porous surfaces like grout. Instead, use a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner or a simple solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and use a dehumidifier or exhaust fan to keep moisture levels down.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue is likely systemic. This indicates a hidden moisture problem, perhaps from a leaking pipe or seal under the toilet, which is common in villas. In these cases, a professional inspection is needed to find and fix the source to prevent regrowth. They can also perform tests to identify the mold species, which determines the appropriate remediation method.
