What's the best local product to clean bathroom mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here in Mirdif for 2 years and just noticed this weekend that the grout between the wall tiles in our master bathroom is turning black. It's mostly in the corner behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. I'm worried it's mold and with the humidity rising again, I want to tackle it. What's the most effective and safe product I can find locally to clean this and stop it from coming back?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's high humidity is common, especially in less-ventilated spots. For black grout behind a toilet, start with a chlorine-based bleach solution, widely available at supermarkets like Carrefour or Ace Hardware. Look for products specifically labeled for mold and mildew removal. Dilute it as directed and apply it directly to the grout, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly.
The key to stopping it from returning is managing moisture, not just cleaning. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it's actually venting outside. Wipe down wet tiles and squeegee glass doors to remove standing water. In a constantly damp corner, the grout may be compromised, allowing mold to grow deep within. If the black discoloration persists after a thorough cleaning or covers a large area (over one square meter), it may indicate a deeper issue. In such cases, a professional inspection can identify if the moisture source is a hidden leak or condensation within the wall, which requires more than surface cleaning. They can also perform a swab test to confirm the mold type, as some varieties require specific remediation protocols. For persistent problems, improving the grout's sealant or regrouting may be the only permanent solution. |
