Should I call a pro for mold with my asthmatic child?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be the dark spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because it’s been so humid lately. I’m worried because my youngest has asthma. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

Any visible mould with an asthmatic child in the home warrants immediate professional assessment. The combination of high UAE humidity and a pre-existing respiratory condition elevates the potential health risk from mould spores.

The dark spots behind the wardrobe indicate a moisture issue, likely from condensation against a cold exterior wall or a past, undetected leak. This is a common problem in Dubai due to the year-round AC use creating temperature differentials. For a confirmed asthmatic, exposure can trigger more frequent and severe attacks, along with chronic coughing and wheezing.

While you can carefully wipe a very small area (less than 1 sq. ft.) with a microfiber cloth and diluted vinegar to see if it returns, a proper inspection is crucial. A professional will identify the moisture source to prevent recurrence and can perform air or surface sampling to determine the mould species. This diagnostic step is important; not all black-coloured mould is the notorious Stachybotrys, but many common types can still significantly irritate sensitive airways.

Do not attempt a large cleanup yourself, as disturbing the mould will release a high concentration of spores into the air your family breathes. Isolate the area by keeping the bedroom door closed until it can be assessed. You should call for an assessment this week; waiting until the weekend is likely acceptable if the area is contained and the child’s symptoms are mild, but any worsening of their breathing means calling someone immediately. Look for an inspector who can provide documented lab results to inform the next steps.
