How to safely treat black mold in bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small black patch of mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet on the wall that faces the outside. I'm worried it might be spreading behind the clothes and the weather has been so humid lately. What's the most effective and safe way to treat this myself, and should I be calling my building management first?

The first step is to identify the moisture source, which is almost always the issue in Dubai's climate. Since the mold is on an exterior wall, it's likely due to condensation from the temperature difference between your AC-cooled room and the humid outside air, or possibly a small leak.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (follow product instructions carefully in a ventilated area). Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and then consider applying a mold-inhibiting primer before repainting.

Crucially, you must address the moisture. Ensure your AC is running efficiently and not set too cold, which increases condensation. Use a moisture absorber like silica gel in the closet and leave space between the wall and your clothes for air circulation. A dehumidifier in the room can help significantly.

You should notify your building management. In the UAE, building facades and external walls are the responsibility of the property owner or management. They need to inspect the exterior for any cracks or compromised seals that are allowing moisture ingress. This is a common issue they should address to prevent recurrence.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a larger area, or you notice a persistent musty smell, it's time for a professional assessment. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact moisture source and recommend a permanent fix, which may involve repairs to the building envelope.
