Should I hire a mold inspector for my bedroom wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles appearing on the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is on the colder exterior wall. It’s been unusually humid the last few weeks and the room always feels damp. Is it worth paying for a professional mold inspection for something that seems contained, or can I handle this myself with a cleaner from ACE Hardware?

That black speckling on your wardrobe's exterior wall is a classic sign of condensation-related mold, very common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant air conditioning creating temperature differentials.

For a small, surface-level patch, you can often handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean the area with a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner from ACE. The critical step is to address the moisture source. Wipe down the cold wall regularly for condensation, ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature to reduce humidity swings, and improve air circulation in the room by leaving wardrobe doors open and using a fan.

However, a professional inspection is strongly recommended in your case for two specific reasons. First, the location on an exterior wall in a villa suggests a potential interstitial condensation issue, meaning mold could be growing inside the wall cavity behind the wardrobe, which you cannot see or effectively treat yourself. Second, the persistent damp feeling indicates a chronic humidity problem that likely extends beyond that single spot; an inspector uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent of the problem and its root cause, preventing it from recurring elsewhere.

While DIY can remove visible mold, an inspection provides a scientific diagnosis of the species (to confirm it's not a more problematic type) and a verified moisture map, which is essential for a permanent solution in our climate.
