How to prevent mold in a seaside bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, on the inside wall facing the sea in our Jumeirah villa, always feels damp. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots on some of my winter jackets when I went to put them away. I run the AC constantly, but it doesn't seem to help this specific area. What’s the best way to prevent this mold from coming back every season?

Mold in seaside closets is common in Dubai due to constant high humidity, even with AC running. The cool interior wall creates a thermal bridge where warm, moisture-laden sea air condenses, providing the dampness mold needs to grow on organic materials like leather, cotton, or wool.
To prevent its return, you must address both humidity and airflow. Start by removing the affected items for professional cleaning and fixing the wall with a mold-specific cleaner, not bleach. For the closet itself, improve air circulation. Leave the closet door ajar frequently or install a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Ensure the room's AC vent isn't blocked by furniture and is directing air into the space; a vent booster fan can help. For a permanent solution, inspect the wall's insulation. The internal wall may lack a proper vapor barrier, allowing condensation. Sealing the wall or adding insulation can break the thermal bridge. A professional inspection can identify this and other hidden moisture sources, like a small plumbing leak. They can also measure the closet's exact humidity level to confirm the problem. In many cases, combining better airflow with targeted dehumidification—and potentially minor renovations—resolves the issue for good. |
