Black mold in wardrobe: treat myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom wardrobe on the outside wall has developed these black fuzzy spots, and all my clothes smell damp. I first noticed it a couple of weeks after that heavy fog we had last month, but it's gotten much worse. I'm worried it's spreading behind the drawers. What's the most effective way to treat this myself, or should I call my building management first?

The black fuzzy spots are very likely mold, a common issue in Dubai after periods of high humidity like heavy fog, which leads to condensation on cooler external walls. Your wardrobe placed against that wall creates a perfect, poorly ventilated environment for it to grow.
You can attempt to treat a very small, surface-level area (less than one square meter) yourself. Move the drawers and inspect behind them to gauge the full extent. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean all affected surfaces with a solution of white vinegar or a detergent like baking soda, not bleach, as bleach only removes the color and does not kill the roots. Wash or dry clean all affected clothing. Then, address the moisture source. This is critical. Wipe down the wall inside the wardrobe to remove any condensation daily and consider using a reusable desiccant dehumidifier inside the enclosed space to control humidity. However, if the mold has spread behind the drawers, is widespread, or has penetrated porous materials like drywall, this is a job for professionals. Building management should be your first call in this instance. Under Dubai regulations, the structural integrity of the building envelope and common property is typically their responsibility. They need to investigate if there is a hidden leak in the external wall or a failure in the waterproofing that is allowing moisture ingress. A professional inspection can identify the exact mold species and the true source of the moisture, which is the only way to ensure it doesn't return. Simply cleaning the visible mold without fixing the underlying water problem will lead to a recurring issue. |
