Can I remove this bedroom mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in the Jumeirah Park villa has been feeling really damp lately, and I just pulled back the corner of the wardrobe and found a patch of black and green mold on the wall behind it. We’ve been running the AC non-stop, but the room never feels truly dry, especially since the humidity picked up last month. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call in a professional mold inspection company to check for a bigger problem?

That visible patch is a definite sign of excess moisture, a common issue in Dubai's climate where high humidity fights against AC systems. You can attempt to clean a small, isolated patch (under 1 square foot) yourself, but the underlying cause must be addressed or it will return.

For a wall behind a wardrobe, the problem is likely poor air circulation and cold wall condensation, not a leak. The AC may be set too cold, causing the wall behind the furniture to become a condensation point. Simply wiping the surface won't fix this.

Use a diluted detergent solution or a dedicated mold remover, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface colour and is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall; it also introduces unwanted moisture. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection during cleaning.

However, a professional inspection is strongly recommended here. The visible patch is just the tip of the iceberg; mold growth within the wall cavity is a real possibility. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and extent of the problem, which is invisible to the naked eye. They can also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol, especially with green/black present. This science-driven approach ensures the problem is solved at its root.
