How to safely remove black mold from under AC leak?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit for a couple of weeks, and now I've just pulled back the corner of the bedroom carpet and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold underneath. It's right where the wall meets the floor and has a really strong, damp smell. What's the safest and fastest way for me to handle this myself before it gets worse?

Black mold under an AC leak requires immediate action due to Dubai's high humidity, which allows it to thrive. The strong, damp smell indicates active microbial growth. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can handle it yourself with strict safety precautions.
First, contain the area. Seal the bedroom door with plastic sheeting to prevent spores from spreading to other rooms. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and rubber gloves. Open a window for ventilation if possible. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push toxins into the air. Lightly mist the moldy patch to dampen it and prevent spores from becoming airborne. Scrub the area with a stiff brush, then wipe all residues with damp paper towels. Place all used materials into a sealed plastic bag for disposal. Crucially, you must address the source. The AC leak must be repaired by a certified technician. Until the moisture source is eliminated, the mold will return. Run a dehumidifier in the room for several days after cleaning to ensure the carpet backing and subfloor are completely dry. For any patch larger than one square meter, or if the mold has penetrated the drywall or underlay, professional remediation is strongly advised. Disturbing larger colonies can create a significant health hazard. In such cases, a company with a microbiology lab can conduct post-remediation verification to confirm the space is safe. |
