DIY or professional for large black mold in Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in the master bedroom, probably from a small hidden leak. The area is about a meter wide and it's starting to smell damp. I'm worried about the health risks for my family but also don't want to get ripped off. For a mold problem this size, should I attempt a DIY cleanup or is it absolutely necessary to call a professional company, and what's a realistic cost I should expect in Dubai?

For a meter-wide patch of black mold, especially with a damp smell indicating an active moisture source, professional remediation is strongly advised in Dubai. The high humidity and constant AC use create perfect conditions for mold to spread inside wall cavities and HVAC systems, which DIY methods cannot adequately address.

Attempting to clean it yourself risks dispersing a high concentration of spores throughout your home, potentially affecting your AC system and other rooms. Proper remediation requires isolating the area with containment barriers, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and removing contaminated porous materials like drywall or insulation that cannot be effectively cleaned.

The realistic cost is not fixed and depends entirely on the extent of the hidden damage. A reputable company will first conduct a thorough inspection, often using a borescope to see inside walls, to determine the full scope of work. The final price is driven by the size of the contained area, the amount of material requiring removal, and the time needed for proper drying and post-remediation verification. Always request a detailed scope of work and ensure the final offer includes post-clearance testing by a third-party to verify the mold levels have returned to normal.
