Is damp room mold causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out our winter clothes from the storage room and found a bunch of black, fuzzy spots on the wall behind the wardrobe and some of the jackets. The room always felt a bit damp but I never thought much of it. Could this mold be the reason for their coughs and what’s the safest way to deal with it myself?

It is highly likely the mold is contributing to your children's persistent cough. The damp, confined space of a storage room in Dubai's climate is a prime environment for mold growth, and the airborne spores it releases are a common respiratory irritant. Children are particularly susceptible to these effects.
The fuzzy black spots indicate active growth, and disturbing the wardrobe has likely released a significant number of spores into your home's air. The most common symptoms from this type of exposure are exactly what you describe: coughing, wheezing, and nasal congestion. For their health, the priority is to stop their exposure immediately. Keep them out of that room and ensure good ventilation throughout the house. Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize more spores, potentially spreading the problem and increasing their exposure. Over-the-counter sprays often fail to address the root moisture problem and can be harmful if misapplied. The safest approach is a professional inspection. A certified inspector can identify the exact species of mold (as not all black discoloration is the toxic Stachybotrys, though all types can cause irritation) and, crucially, use moisture meters to find the source of the dampness—whether it's condensation from temperature differences, a small leak, or humidity seepage common in Dubai villas. They can then provide a protocol for safe remediation, which involves containment, HEPA filtration, and removal of contaminated materials like those jackets. Resolving the underlying moisture issue is the only way to prevent it from returning. |
