How to treat black mold behind wardrobe in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading along the bottom edge of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s been really humid lately and I guess the AC isn't reaching back there. What's the best way to deal with this myself, or should I call the building management first?

Move the wardrobe away from the wall immediately to assess the full extent and allow the area to dry. In Dubai's high humidity, this is likely a condensation issue where stagnant, moist air is trapped. The wall is cooler than the room's air, causing water to condense and mould to grow.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the surface with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can worsen indoor air quality without killing the roots. However, if the mould covers a larger area, has a strong musty odour, or has penetrated through the paint (you see fuzzy growth or staining on the drywall), DIY is not sufficient. This indicates a persistent moisture problem that cleaning won't fix. You need to identify and rectify the source of the moisture, which could be a hidden leak or severe condensation. Given the location, it is wise to inform building management. They are responsible for the building envelope and structural integrity. They can check if there is a leak from an adjacent apartment or a pipe in the wall, which is a common issue. For a definitive diagnosis of the mould type and to ensure it is properly remediated, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended. They use lab analysis to identify the species and concentration, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. |
