How to treat and prevent damp wall mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park feels damp and has these black speckles. We first spotted it a couple of weeks ago, and even though we keep the AC running, it just seems to be getting worse. We're worried it's spreading. What's the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from coming back for good?

The damp wall behind your wardrobe in Jumeirah Park is a classic symptom of condensation, a very common issue in Dubai due to high humidity levels and our year-round reliance on AC. The black speckles are almost certainly mold. The AC, while cooling the air, can inadvertently create cold spots on external walls; when warm, humid air penetrates from outside and meets this cold surface, condensation forms, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive.

For effective treatment, you must first address the moisture source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air to circulate and the wall to dry completely. The mold itself can be cleaned from non-porous surfaces with a solution of detergent and water, but avoid bleach as it does not kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. For porous surfaces like drywall, the affected section often needs to be cut out and replaced once the moisture issue is resolved, as the mold will have penetrated deeply.

Preventing recurrence requires a two-part solution. First, improve ventilation behind the furniture; even a small gap can make a significant difference. Second, and most critically, address the thermal bridging and condensation. This often involves checking the AC settings to ensure it's effectively dehumidifying and potentially improving the wall's insulation to prevent the cold spot from forming.

For a case that is spreading, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the exact mold species and the full extent of the problem, as hidden growth within the wall cavity is likely. Reputable providers use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the condensation source and can conduct post-remediation verification testing to confirm the area is truly resolved, which is the key to a permanent solution.
