Should I test for black mold or see a doctor first?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks and I just found what looks like black mold spreading along the bottom of the wall behind their bunk bed in our Jumeirah apartment. I think it might be from a slow leak in the AC unit on the other side of that wall. What's the fastest way to get this professionally tested and cleaned in Dubai, and should I take them to a doctor first?

See a doctor first. Your children's symptoms are the immediate health priority. A doctor can assess their condition, provide treatment for the cough, and document a potential environmental cause. This medical record is also important if you need to discuss the issue with your building management.

While "black mold" is a common term, the color alone doesn't identify the species or its toxicity. In Dubai's climate, the constant AC use and high humidity create perfect conditions for various molds to grow from condensation or leaks. The mold behind the bunk bed is a clear sign of a moisture problem, likely from the AC unit you suspect.

For testing, a professional inspection is necessary. They will identify the moisture source, assess the extent of growth, and take samples for a microbiology lab to identify the species. This confirms the type of mold and informs the correct remediation plan. Simply cleaning the visible spot without fixing the leak and checking for hidden growth inside the wall is ineffective.

Look for a provider that offers a combined inspection, diagnostic testing, and remediation service. They should be able to handle the moisture source (like the AC leak), contain the area to prevent spores from spreading during cleanup, and provide post-remediation verification to confirm the environment is back to a healthy state.
