How to treat and prevent black mold in a damp closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Mirdif has been great, but since the humidity started last month, we’ve discovered black mold spots in the back of the walk-in closet where we store our winter clothes and luggage. The wall feels slightly damp, and I’m worried it’s going to ruin everything in there and spread. What’s the most effective way to treat this myself and what can I do to stop the dampness from coming back for good?

The dampness causing that mold is almost certainly due to condensation from high humidity meeting a cooler wall surface, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. Your priority is to stop the moisture source, not just clean the visible mold.
For treatment, first move everything out of the closet. Wipe the mold off the wall with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent; avoid bleach as it doesn't kill the roots and can worsen indoor air quality. Allow the area to dry completely with a fan before returning any items. Wash or professionally clean any affected fabrics to prevent spores from spreading. To prevent it from returning, you must address the condensation. Identify if the damp wall is an exterior wall; these are often colder and attract moisture from humid indoor air. Ensure the room's AC is running consistently, as it dehumidifies the air. Leave the closet door open to allow air circulation. For a more permanent solution, consider having a professional assess the wall for insulation gaps or install a small dehumidifier or moisture absorber in that space. In many villas, the underlying issue is a thermal bridge or lack of vapor barrier, which requires a targeted repair. If the dampness persists or the mold returns quickly, a professional inspection is recommended to identify any hidden moisture issues within the wall cavity that you cannot address yourself. |
