Mold behind sofa: DIY cleaning or professional remediation in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It must have been hidden there for a while, and since the recent humidity, my husband's allergies have been way worse. Is this something we can clean with bleach ourselves, or is this a job for a professional mold remediation company in Dubai, and what would that kind of service typically cost?

With a two-year growth period and worsening allergy symptoms, this likely requires professional assessment. Visible black mould hidden for that long suggests a deeper moisture issue, not just surface condensation.

Bleach is not recommended. It can remove surface discolouration but often fails to kill the root structure (hyphae) within porous materials like drywall. It can also aggravate respiratory issues during application. For a small, surface-level patch, a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution is a safer DIY option, but your situation exceeds that.

In Dubai’s climate, this is almost certainly a condensation issue from the wall's temperature differential with the air-conditioned room, exacerbated by the sofa trapping humid air. The problem will recur unless the source of moisture is identified and controlled.

Professional remediation is advised here. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact moisture source and extent of growth. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing affected materials, HEPA vacuuming, and applying EPA-approved antimicrobials. The final, critical step is a clearance test from an independent lab to confirm spore counts have returned to normal indoor levels.

Costs vary significantly based on the infestation's scale and structural involvement. For an accurate assessment and quote, you would need an on-site inspection from a certified company. Look for providers who follow IICRC S520 standards and can provide documented lab results, not just a visual cleanup.
