Should I hire a pro for black mold or use vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building. With the humidity rising again, I’m starting to worry it could spread quickly. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution?

It depends on the extent and cause. For a small, isolated patch (under one square foot) on a non-porous surface like a painted wall, a DIY approach can be effective. However, the location on an exterior wall in Dubai is a red flag, as it often indicates a deeper condensation or minor water intrusion issue from temperature differentials between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior.

You can attempt to clean it yourself with a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold remover. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution sit, then dry it completely with a fan. Crucially, you must identify and address the moisture source. In your case, check for condensation on that wall or any tiny cracks in the building envelope.

If the mold returns within a week, the patch is larger than a square foot, you smell a musty odor, or anyone in the household experiences unexplained respiratory issues, stop DIY and call a professional. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden moisture source a surface clean misses. In many Dubai villas and buildings, this requires a professional assessment to prevent recurrence. For verifiable results, a company with its own microbiology lab can test to identify the mold type and confirm remediation was successful, which is important for high-risk individuals.
