How to prevent humidity in my Jumeirah closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has developed small black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. The last time we had that heavy fog a couple of weeks ago, the whole room felt damp for days. What’s the best way to keep the humidity out of that specific area to stop this from getting worse?

That's a classic sign of humidity-related mold growth, especially after the heavy fog we had. The exterior wall of a villa in Jumeirah is particularly susceptible to condensation when warm, humid outdoor air meets the cooler interior surfaces cooled by your AC.

First, address the immediate problem. Remove all affected leather items and clean them with a dedicated leather cleaner to prevent further damage and spore spread. For the closet itself, wipe down all interior surfaces with a diluted white vinegar solution to address any surface mold.

To prevent recurrence, you need to manage the moisture. The most effective first step is to improve air circulation inside the closet. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar to allow your room's air conditioning to circulate dry, cooled air into the space. Avoid overpacking the closet, as tight stacks of items trap stagnant, humid air. For a more targeted solution, use a renewable desiccant like silica gel packs. Place several large tubs or hanging bags inside the closet; they will actively absorb excess moisture from the air and can be reactivated in the sun every few months.

For a permanent fix, investigate the source. The dampness on the exterior wall suggests thermal bridging or minor infiltration. A professional inspection can identify if improved insulation or sealing is needed behind the closet. If the musty smell persists or you see regrowth, the issue may be inside the wall cavity, which requires professional assessment and remediation to prevent structural damage.
