How to permanently remove and prevent mold in Dubai humidity?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Springs for about two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the back of the bedroom wardrobe on the exterior wall. It's been really humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's spreading, even though we run the AC constantly. What's the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good and stop it from coming back, especially with our Dubai humidity?

The black spots on your exterior wall in Springs are a classic Dubai issue, caused by thermal bridging. The cold AC inside meets the hot, humid air outside, creating condensation inside the wall that mould feeds on. Simply wiping it with bleach is a temporary fix that won't address the moisture source.

For permanent removal, the wall must be completely dried. Start by moving everything out of the wardrobe. Scrub the mould off the surface with a detergent solution, but avoid bleach-based cleaners as they can exacerbate the problem for some mould types and don't prevent regrowth. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture. An infrared thermal imaging scan during a professional inspection can pinpoint the exact location of the condensation within the wall cavity.

Prevention requires managing the humidity differential. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a clogged drain line adds moisture to the air. Run an exhaust fan in adjacent bathrooms for longer periods after showers. For a lasting solution, the wall itself may need improved insulation or a vapour barrier to break the thermal bridge, which is a common remediation step for villas here. In many cases, a dehumidifier running near the problem area, especially during the more humid winter months, can help reduce the ambient moisture that fuels mould growth.

If the mould covers more than a square meter or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional assessment is recommended to diagnose the hidden moisture issue and provide a targeted, permanent solution.
