Mold behind villa wardrobe: DIY or professional remediation?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has been feeling really humid lately, and I just pulled out the guest room wardrobe to find a bunch of black and green spots on the wall behind it. It's been like that since the weather changed a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a dehumidifier, or do I need to call in one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

This is a very common issue in Dubai villas, especially during the more humid months. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold spot with no air circulation, which leads to condensation and rapid mold growth when humidity is high.

For a small, isolated patch (under one square meter), a thorough DIY approach can work. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold remover or a solution of white vinegar and water, not just bleach, which only removes surface color. Then, use a dehumidifier in that room and keep the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to promote airflow.

However, if the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or you see it has penetrated the drywall, professional remediation is strongly advised. This indicates a deeper moisture issue within the wall cavity that cleaning the surface won't fix. Professionals have the tools to properly contain the area, remove contaminated materials like drywall, and address the root cause to prevent rapid regrowth, which is very likely in our climate.

Given the villa's location in Jumeirah with high ambient humidity, an assessment by a company with a microbiology lab can identify the species and its potential health risks, which is crucial if household members have allergies or respiratory sensitivities. The goal is to solve the moisture problem, not just wipe away the visible symptom.
