Urgent: DIY mold cleaning or professional inspection needed?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa always feels damp, and we’ve started finding small black spots on some leather bags and shoes stored in there. It’s been like this since the humidity really kicked in a couple of months ago. How urgent is it that I get a professional mold inspection, or can I handle this with a dehumidifier and cleaning it myself first?

Given the dampness and visible black spots on leather in your Jumeirah villa, a professional inspection is strongly recommended before any DIY cleaning. The persistent damp feeling indicates a moisture source that a dehumidifier alone won't resolve, and the growth on organic materials like leather suggests an active colony.

The UAE's high humidity, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold in enclosed spaces like closets on exterior walls. The issue is often not the visible growth but the hidden mold inside the wall or under the flooring, caused by a small plumbing leak or condensation from an AC duct. Disturbing it with DIY cleaning can aerosolize spores and spread the problem.

A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the water source, which is the only way to achieve a long-term solution. For verification, surface or air samples analyzed by a microbiology lab can identify the mold type, which is crucial for determining the correct remediation method.

While you wait for an assessment, place a dehumidifier in the room and ensure the AC is running consistently to lower humidity, but do not attempt to scrub the spots. This is a case where professional diagnostics are necessary to protect your property and health.
