How to remove black mold in Dubai villa or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall behind the clothes rack and has a really damp, earthy smell. I'm worried it's been growing there since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago. What’s the most effective way to safely remove this myself, and when should I definitely call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

That black patch with the damp smell in your Jumeirah villa is likely due to the high humidity we've had, often worsened by air conditioning creating cold spots where condensation forms. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can handle it yourself safely.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and consider sealing it with plastic sheeting. Mix a solution of one part detergent and ten parts water, scrub the area thoroughly, then wipe it down with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water) to disinfect. Dry the area completely with a fan; this is critical in Dubai's climate. Fix the moisture source—this is often a small AC condensation leak in the wall or poor ventilation in the closed closet space.

Call a professional mold remediation company if the area is larger than one square meter, if the mold returns after cleaning, or if you suspect it's inside the wall cavity from a leak. Professionals are also necessary if anyone in the household has respiratory issues. They use containment barriers, industrial HEPA air scrubbers, and follow Dubai Municipality guidelines for safe removal and disposal. A certified inspector can conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and confirm the airborne spore count has returned to a safe level after remediation.
