How to quickly fix AC leak and mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Dubai Marina seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet below, and now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold in the corner behind the sofa. It’s been getting worse since the humidity really spiked a couple of weeks ago. What’s the fastest way to deal with this myself before it becomes a bigger problem?

First, stop the water source. The AC leak is likely a clogged condensate drain line, which is extremely common in Dubai's high-humidity climate as algae and sludge build up quickly. Locate the drain pipe (usually a white PVC pipe near your outdoor unit) and try pouring a cup of warm distilled vinegar down it to break up the clog. This is a temporary fix.
For the mold, your immediate goal is to stop its growth. The damp carpet and high indoor humidity are fueling it. Move the sofa to improve air circulation. Dry the wet carpet area thoroughly with a wet/dry vacuum and then use a fan or dehumidifier. For the mold patch on the wall, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a solution of detergent and water, then follow with a diluted white vinegar spray (1 part vinegar to 1 part water). Do not use bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth on porous surfaces. These are stop-gap measures. The underlying issue is the AC malfunction and persistent moisture. In Dubai's environment, a small leak can lead to significant hidden mold growth inside walls or the AC unit itself within days. A recurring leak and visible mold growth strongly indicate a problem that requires a professional HVAC technician to fully clear the drain line and ensure the unit is operating correctly. For the mold, if the area is larger than one square meter, or if you notice a musty smell or health symptoms, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and recommend proper remediation. |
