How to remove mold behind wardrobe and prevent its return?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed some black spots behind our bedroom wardrobe. It’s on the interior wall, and with the humidity lately, the room just feels damp. What’s the best way to treat this mold myself and what can I do to the wall or AC to stop it from coming back for good?

Mold behind furniture on an interior wall is a common issue in Dubai, especially during humid periods. The wall is likely colder than the room's air, causing condensation and creating a damp environment where mold can grow.
For a small area, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to four parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture problem. To prevent its return, you must manage the humidity. Move the wardrobe at least two inches away from the wall to allow for proper air circulation. Ensure your AC is functioning correctly; it is your primary tool for dehumidification. Set it to a consistent, comfortable temperature and consider running it on "dry" mode if available. Check that no vents are blocked and that air can flow freely around the room. In many villas, the root cause is a minor leak or penetrating damp from the external wall, which high humidity exacerbates. If the mold returns after cleaning and improving ventilation, the issue may be more serious. A professional inspection can identify hidden moisture within the wall cavity or issues with your AC unit's drainage that are contributing to the problem. For persistent or large-scale mold, lab testing of a sample is the only way to confirm the species and ensure the correct remediation protocol is followed. |
