How to permanently stop black mold in UAE closet?« Back to Previous Page

My walk-in closet in my Marina apartment has developed a stubborn black mold along the back wall, even though we run the AC constantly. I’ve tried wiping it away with bleach a few times, but it just comes back within a couple of weeks. I'm worried it's getting into our clothes. What's the best long-term solution to stop this for good, and is there a specific type of dehumidifier that works well in our UAE climate?

Black mold in a Marina closet is a classic Dubai issue caused by the extreme humidity and the temperature differential between the AC-cooled room and the warmer wall. Bleach only removes surface discoloration but doesn't address the root moisture problem or the hyphae (roots) growing within the porous wall material.

The permanent solution requires a three-step process. First, identify and eliminate the moisture source. The back wall is likely a cold bridge or has a minor, hidden condensation leak from an adjacent pipe or the AC drain line. A thermal imaging inspection can pinpoint these exact cold spots. Second, the mold must be properly remediated. This involves HEPA vacuuming, abrasive cleaning of the porous surface, and application of an EPA-approved antimicrobial coating to prevent regrowth, not just wiping with bleach. Finally, control the environment. Your closet needs better air circulation. Leave the door ajar and ensure the AC vent is not blocked. For such a confined, damp space, a compact desiccant dehumidifier is more effective than a refrigerant model in the UAE's humid climate, as it works better at lower temperatures.

Given the persistence, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the hidden moisture source. Improper handling can aerosolize spores, spreading the problem. For remediation, look for providers who follow IICRC S520 standards and can provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the space is truly mold-free.
