Fastest way to treat black mold from AC in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It's been crazy humid lately and I think it might be from the AC unit. What's the fastest way to get this treated properly, and should I call the building management or just handle it myself with a local cleaning service?

The fastest way to treat the mold is to first identify and stop the moisture source, which is likely condensation from the AC. In Dubai's high humidity, AC units that are set too cold can cause significant condensation on walls, especially in enclosed spaces like closets.
For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, since the mold is inside and on a wall, the root cause needs to be addressed. Simply wiping it will result in it returning if the moisture issue persists. You should adjust your AC to maintain a consistent temperature that reduces condensation, ideally between 22-24°C, and use a dehumidifier in the bedroom. For a villa, you are responsible for the internal unit and the condensate drain line. Check if the drain pan is overflowing or if the drain line is clogged, as this is a common cause. Given that the mold is inside your private villa, building management typically handles common areas and external structures, not internal AC units. For proper remediation, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the wall for moisture and potential spread within the cavity. A local cleaning service may only treat the surface; a dedicated indoor health company can use moisture meters and provide a lab analysis to identify the species and ensure the underlying cause is resolved. |
