Is black mold in my villa causing our cough?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has this weird black speckling creeping up the wall behind the wardrobe in the master bedroom. We noticed it after that really humid spell a few weeks back, and now my husband and I have both had this persistent dry cough and itchy eyes that just won’t go away. Is this definitely mold, and could it be causing our symptoms?

Black speckling behind furniture after a humid spell is almost certainly mold. The combination of high indoor humidity and a cold surface (like an exterior wall) creates the perfect environment for it to grow. Your persistent dry cough and itchy eyes are classic symptoms of mold exposure, as spores become airborne and irritate the respiratory system.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. Year-round AC creates cold surfaces, and when humid air from outside meets these surfaces, condensation forms inside the walls, often behind large furniture blocking airflow. This hidden moisture leads to growth you only discover later.

You should arrange for a professional inspection. A certified inspector can identify the moisture source—often a small leak or condensation—and assess the extent. For a confirmed case like this, DIY cleaning is not advised; disturbing it can release a large number of spores. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing the affected materials, and addressing the underlying moisture problem to prevent recurrence.

The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for healthy housing that cover dampness and mold, reinforcing that this is a recognized health and building integrity issue. Resolving the moisture is the only permanent solution.
