Is black mold in closet dangerous and can I clean it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s been worse since the weather got so humid, and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. Is this something we can clean ourselves with bleach or do we need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies?

Black mold in a closet is a health concern, especially with the symptoms you're describing. The high humidity in Dubai creates ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly in poorly ventilated spaces like closets on interior walls. The stuffy nose is a common reaction to mold spores, which are allergens and irritants.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Do not use bleach, as it is mostly water and can feed the mold root structure while only bleaching the surface color. A solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner is more effective. Scrub the area, ensure it is completely dry, and address the moisture source—often this is condensation from an AC set too cold or a lack of air circulation. Use a dehumidifier or a small desiccant pack in the closet. Given that the growth has returned and is linked to health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the exact species through lab analysis to confirm the risk level and locate the hidden moisture source that DIY cleaning often misses. In the UAE, proper remediation follows standards like the IICRC S520, which focuses on containment and removing the mold at its root to prevent recurrence and protect your indoor air quality. |
