Is bathroom mold causing our stuffy noses and cough?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles in the grout between the bathroom tiles. It's worse in the corner behind the toilet where it's always a bit damp. Lately, my husband and I have both been waking up with stuffy noses and a bit of a cough that clears up once we leave for work. Is this mold, and could it be the reason we're feeling sick, or is it just the usual Dubai dust?

The black speckles in your grout are almost certainly mold, given the constant dampness in that area. In Dubai's high humidity, bathrooms are prime locations for mold growth, especially in less ventilated spots behind toilets. Your symptoms—stuffy noses and cough that improve when you leave—are classic signs of mold exposure for many people.

Mold releases spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that irritate respiratory systems, particularly during prolonged exposure like sleeping in the same room. While Dubai dust can contribute, the pattern of improvement when away from the apartment strongly suggests the bathroom mold is a key factor.

For immediate action, increase ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan longer after showers and wiping down wet surfaces. Commercial mold removal sprays can treat visible surface growth on grout. However, if the mold has penetrated porous grout or there's a musty odor, professional assessment is wise to check for hidden moisture in walls. Remediation is often needed when growth is widespread or recurrent.

Since you're in an apartment, notify your building management. Dubai regulations often hold property owners responsible for resolving mold issues stemming from building defects, like inadequate ventilation or water leaks. A professional inspection can document the cause, which is useful for liaising with them. For health concerns, a lab test can identify the mold type, though remediation is typically recommended regardless of species when symptoms are present.
