How to treat black mold behind sofa in villa?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah Park has been feeling really humid lately, and I just pulled our leather sofa away from the wall to find a huge patch of black mold spreading behind it. We had that heavy dew a couple of weeks ago and I think the moisture just never left the room. What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves, and should I be calling the landlord immediately about this?

First, address the moisture source. The humidity and condensation from the heavy dew, combined with the sofa trapping air against the wall, created the perfect environment for mold. Improve ventilation in the room immediately by running a dehumidifier and ensuring your AC is set to a dry mode to pull excess moisture from the air.

For the mold itself, wear an N95 mask and gloves. For a small patch on a hard surface, a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective for cleaning. However, on porous surfaces like drywall or plaster, the mold often penetrates deeper than visible. Scrubbing may not remove the root structure, and the staining and damage may be permanent, requiring wall section replacement.

Given the description of a "huge patch," this likely exceeds a simple surface clean. In Dubai's climate, hidden mold within wall cavities is a common issue following moisture events. You should call your landlord immediately. According to typical UAE rental law, the property owner is generally responsible for addressing structural issues and significant mold infestations that affect the property's habitability. Document the damage with photos and formally notify them in writing.

For a problem of this scale, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent and identify any hidden moisture within the walls. Proper remediation often requires containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent recurrence, which is beyond most DIY methods.
