Can I clean closet black mold myself or hire professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It seems to have appeared since the humidity spiked last week, and I'm worried it's spread to some of our belongings. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

It depends on the size of the patch and whether it's on a surface or has penetrated porous materials like drywall or clothing. For a small patch (under one square foot) on a non-porous surface like a painted wall or closet shelf, you can clean it yourself.
Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. A vinegar solution is often more effective than bleach for surface mold on non-porous materials, as it can kill the spores whereas bleach may only lighten the color. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry. The key is to address the moisture source; in Dubai's climate, this is almost always high humidity or condensation from an AC unit. Use a dehumidifier or ensure your AC is running sufficiently to keep indoor humidity below 60%. However, if the mold covers a larger area, has returned after previous cleaning, or has grown on porous items like your winter clothes and the wall behind them, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. Remediation involves more than cleaning; it requires isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and properly disposing of contaminated porous materials to prevent spreading. The appearance of mold in a closet often indicates a wider humidity problem in the room that needs diagnostic tools to identify. In these cases, a company with microbial testing can identify the species and its source, which is critical for a permanent solution. |
