Should I call building management or a mold company in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It seems worse since the humidity really kicked in last month. I'm really worried about our health and what this is doing to the walls. What's the best way to handle this properly in Dubai – should I call the building management first or get a specialized cleaning company myself?

Your situation is common here due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. The first step is to report it to your building management immediately. By Dubai law, they are responsible for investigating and fixing the source of the moisture, which is almost certainly a hidden leak in the plumbing or a crack in the building envelope that's allowing condensation to form inside the wall.

While you wait for their assessment, you can clean the visible surface mold with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a specialized mold remover, but this is only a temporary fix. The underlying moisture problem must be solved, or it will return quickly. For a closet, ensure there is adequate air circulation; leaving the door ajar can help.

If the building management is unresponsive, the leak source is not found, or the mold patch is large (over one square meter) or has returned after their repair, then you should engage a specialized mold inspection company. A professional service can use thermal imaging to find the exact moisture source and take air/surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species and confirm it has been properly remediated after the leak is fixed. This diagnostic approach is crucial for peace of mind in our climate.
