How to remove black mold and prevent future dampness?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch and the humidity in the room has been really high lately, even with the AC running constantly. I’m worried it will spread to our clothes and other rooms. What’s the best way to tackle this ourselves to kill the mold for good and what can we do to stop the dampness and humidity in that specific spot from coming back?

The black mold in your closet is likely due to condensation from high humidity, a common Dubai issue where indoor moisture levels can exceed 70% even with AC running. The damp wall suggests a persistent moisture source that must be addressed first.

For a small patch under one square meter, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the root structure on porous surfaces like drywall. After cleaning, let the area dry completely. Bag and wash any affected clothes in hot water.

To prevent it from returning, you must control the humidity. Move the stored clothes away from the wall to improve air circulation. Use a portable dehumidifier in the bedroom, as your AC may not be sufficient to manage humidity in a closed closet. Check for and seal any gaps around windows or AC ducts that might be letting humid air in.

If the wall remains damp or the mold covers a larger area, the issue could be a hidden leak or a more serious condensation problem within the wall cavity. In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source, as simply cleaning surface mold will not be a permanent solution.
