Is bathroom wall mold my responsibility or landlord's?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for two years, and I've just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the bathroom wall where it meets the tiled floor. It’s in the corner behind the toilet and seems to be spreading. Is this something I need to fix myself with bleach, or should I be reporting this to my landlord as their responsibility?

Check your tenancy contract first. In Dubai, landlords are generally responsible for structural and maintenance issues, including leaks or faulty waterproofing that cause mold. Tenants are typically responsible for mold caused by their own lack of ventilation or cleanliness.
The location you describe, at the wall-floor junction, often indicates a persistent moisture source like a small leak from plumbing in the wall or a failed silicone seal. This is likely a maintenance issue for the landlord. Document the mold with photos and immediately report it in writing to your property manager or landlord. They are obligated to investigate and fix the underlying moisture problem. Using bleach is a temporary fix that only removes surface discoloration; it will return if the hidden moisture issue isn't resolved. For a proper assessment, a professional inspection can identify the exact moisture source. In Dubai's humid climate, even small leaks combined with constant AC use create a perfect environment for this type of hidden mold growth. |
