Black spots on damp bedroom wall: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming along the corner of our bedroom wall where the headboard is. It's been extra humid lately and the room always feels damp. What's the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional cleaning company straight away?

Black spots in a damp corner are a common issue in Dubai villas, especially during humid periods. This is likely surface mould feeding on condensation from the AC's cold wall meeting the warm, humid room air. For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt DIY.
First, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Move the headboard to improve air circulation. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar with three parts water and scrub the area. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and can push spores deeper into porous surfaces like plaster. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan afterwards; a small dehumidifier in the room can help manage the dampness long-term. If the mould returns quickly, covers a larger area, or has a musty odour, it's time for a professional assessment. The wall cavity behind may be affected, which requires specialized equipment to diagnose and remediate. In the UAE's climate, the root cause is often insufficient ventilation or an underlying humidity issue that DIY cleaning won't solve. A certified inspector can identify the moisture source and the mould species to determine the correct remediation protocol. |
