AC mold found in closet. DIY cleanup or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our master bedroom closet has been leaking a bit for a couple of weeks and I finally opened up the panel to check. There's black and green fuzzy mold all over the inside wall and on some of our stored bags. What's the best way to handle this safely myself, or should I just call my building's maintenance immediately?

Stop using the AC and call building maintenance immediately. This is beyond a DIY task. Visible mold on walls and belongings, especially with an active leak, indicates significant moisture accumulation and potential spread inside the wall cavity, which you cannot properly assess or remediate yourself.
In Dubai's climate, the constant high humidity and condensation from a leaking AC unit create an ideal environment for rapid mold growth. The fuzzy appearance suggests a large colony, and disturbing it without proper containment and PPE can aerosolize spores throughout your living space, posing health risks. For your safety, do not attempt to clean the bags or the unit yourself. Your building's maintenance team is responsible for fixing the leak at its source. However, their scope is typically limited to the mechanical repair, not the mold remediation or verifying the air quality afterwards. Once the leak is fixed, the mold-infested materials and your affected belongings will require professional remediation to safely remove the contamination. After maintenance repairs the unit, a professional assessment is crucial to determine the full extent of the mold growth behind the walls and to develop a remediation plan. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide the necessary testing to confirm the space is safe for reoccupancy after cleanup. |
