Black mold on damp wall: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of our building in JVC, and it feels slightly damp. What’s the best way to handle this ourselves, or should I call a professional cleaning company straight away?

Black mold on a damp interior wall in JVC is a sign of a moisture intrusion issue, which is common here due to our high humidity and temperature differentials between AC-cooled interiors and the hot exterior. The dampness suggests a possible condensation point or a leak from the outside.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt a DIY approach. First, move the sofa to allow airflow. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water and scrub the area. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can push spores into the air. After cleaning, dry the wall completely with a fan. The critical step is identifying and addressing the moisture source. Check for cracks in the external wall sealant, leaking AC drain lines, or inadequate insulation creating a cold spot for condensation. If the area is larger than a square meter, the mold returns after cleaning, or the dampness persists, stop and call a professional. Disturbing large colonies can aerosolize a high volume of spores. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of water, which is often not where the stain appears. In many Dubai villas and apartments, this is due to leaking concealed pipes or compromised external waterproofing. Remediation involves containing the area, safe removal of affected materials, and addressing the root cause to prevent recurrence. A lab test can confirm the mold type, which is recommended if occupants have respiratory sensitivities. |
