Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Silicon Oasis. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I think the lack of airflow back there caused it. What's the best way to deal with this myself, or should I call my landlord immediately to handle it?

Stop moving the wardrobe and call your landlord immediately. In Dubai, residential tenancy contracts typically place the responsibility for structural repairs and addressing issues like dampness and mould on the landlord, provided the tenant has not caused the damage through negligence. Document the issue with clear photos and send a formal written notification.

The black speckles spreading along the wall suggest a persistent moisture issue, likely condensation from the high humidity trapped behind the furniture with no airflow. This is a common problem here due to our climate. While small patches on a non-porous surface can sometimes be cleaned with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, the location and spreading nature indicate a more serious hidden problem within the wall that requires professional diagnosis. DIY cleaning will only remove the visible mould, not the moisture source, so it will return quickly.

A professional inspection can identify the root cause—which could be anything from a hidden pipe leak to inadequate insulation or rising damp—and propose the correct remediation protocol. They will also verify the mould type, as some species common in humid climates require specific handling. For your health and to ensure the property is properly repaired, involving the landlord to engage a qualified professional is the most effective course of action.
