Can black mold behind my wardrobe cause my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I've just discovered a bunch of black spots behind our bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It’s been so humid lately, and I'm worried it's making them sick. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I absolutely need to call a professional company?

Black mold behind a wardrobe can absolutely be the cause of your children's persistent cough. In Dubai's high humidity, especially with recent weather, this is a common scenario. The cough is likely an irritant response to mold spores becoming airborne and affecting their respiratory systems.
You should not clean this with bleach. Bleach is mostly water, which can feed the mold's roots deep in porous materials like drywall, and it only bleaches the surface color without addressing the underlying colony. More importantly, improper cleaning can aerosolize a massive number of spores, potentially worsening your children's exposure and symptoms. For a patch this size and location, a professional assessment is strongly advised. The visible spots are often just the "fruit" of a larger, hidden problem within the wall cavity, exacerbated by condensation from year-round AC use. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source—often a small leak or penetrating damp—and the mold species to confirm the health risk. Until it's handled, keep the children out of that room and ensure good ventilation. The remediation process for a suspected Stachybotrys (black mold) case requires containment, HEPA filtration to capture spores, and antimicrobial treatment, not just wiping. Reputable firms will provide before-and-after air quality test results from an independent lab to verify the environment is safe again. |
