Black mold in Dubai AC closet: DIY or call professional« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for about 3 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It must have been there a while, and I'm worried it’s from the AC unit. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai straight away?

For a small patch (under 1 square meter) that is accessible, you can attempt DIY cleaning. The high humidity and constant AC use in Dubai create ideal conditions for condensation and mold growth, especially in enclosed spaces like closets against exterior walls. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then thoroughly dry it. A dehumidifier or increased AC runtime can help prevent recurrence by controlling moisture.

Given the mold was hidden for some time and you suspect the AC, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The mold you see is likely just the surface growth; the underlying cause, potentially a small condensation leak from the AC drain line or poor insulation, must be identified and corrected to prevent it from returning. In the UAE, remediation companies should follow internationally recognized IICRC standards. A reputable provider will conduct a thorough assessment, not just clean the visible mold, and can use moisture meters to find the source. For health safety and a permanent solution, calling a professional is the most reliable course of action.
