Is Dubai black mold dangerous and need professional removal?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I'm getting headaches. I finally pulled out our sofa in the living room to check the wall behind it and found a huge patch of black mold spreading from the corner near the sliding door, probably from a small leak I didn't notice. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed this. Is this type of mold in Dubai especially dangerous and should I get a professional company to handle it or can I tackle it myself with bleach?

The black mold you've found is a health concern, especially with the symptoms you're describing. In Dubai's climate, this is frequently Stachybotrys, which can produce irritants and toxins that cause persistent coughing and headaches, particularly in children. The high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use create ideal conditions for it to thrive behind furniture and in poorly ventilated corners.

This is not a DIY bleach job. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on non-porous materials; it doesn't kill the mold roots deep within drywall and can actually aggravate spores into the air. Proper remediation requires isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like drywall and insulation, and using specialized HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores.

For a patch that size and given the health impact, professional remediation is strongly advised. The process is regulated by Dubai Municipality standards, which trained technicians follow to ensure it's done safely and effectively, preventing cross-contamination to other parts of your villa. They will also identify and fix the underlying moisture source, which is the only way to prevent it from returning.

Start by getting a professional inspection from a company that can provide lab analysis to confirm the mold type. This gives you a clear picture of the risk and the required scope of work, ensuring the health of your family is prioritized.
