Safely remove black mold from kids' bathtub sealant?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual for the past couple of weeks, and I finally pulled back the rubber sealant around the bathtub in our master bathroom. It’s completely black and moldy underneath, which I’m sure is the cause. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this mold for good, considering my little ones use this bath every day?

Bathroom mold is extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use, which creates heavy condensation. The black growth under sealant is often Cladosporium or Aspergillus, which can indeed irritate children's airways and cause persistent coughing.

For immediate, safe removal while your children are not in the home, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the affected area with a paste of baking soda and water or a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface color and can release harmful fumes in an enclosed space. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan after cleaning.

This is often a temporary fix. The mold grows beneath the surface of compromised sealant, which is porous. To remove it for good, the old sealant must be completely scraped out, the underlying substrate treated with a antimicrobial solution, and new, high-quality sealant professionally applied. This ensures the moisture barrier is fully restored.

Given the health symptoms and the extent of the hidden growth, a professional inspection is wise. They can assess if moisture has penetrated behind tiles or walls, which is a common issue here. For daily prevention, run the bathroom exhaust fan for 30 minutes after showers and regularly wipe down wet surfaces to minimize condensation.
