Urgent to remove black mold in kids' bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our Mirdif villa has had a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and I just pulled out a drawer in the closet to find a bunch of black spots spreading up the wall behind it. With the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach over the weekend?

Visible black mold growth behind furniture, especially in a child's bedroom, should be addressed promptly. Given the high humidity in Dubai and the fact it's in a confined space with poor air circulation, the colony will likely continue to spread. The primary concern is the persistent exposure to mold spores, which can exacerbate allergies and asthma, particularly in children.

While a small surface patch might be manageable with a DIY approach, the situation you describe often indicates a larger problem. The wall cavity behind could be affected, which you cannot see or treat yourself. Using bleach is not recommended; it is mostly water and can feed the root structure of the mold deeper in the material while only bleaching the visible surface. It also fails to address the underlying moisture source, which is critical.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source—whether it's condensation from AC ducts, a small leak, or rising damp—and assess the full extent of the growth. They can then perform containment and remediation to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the room during cleaning. The goal is to verify the environment is returned to a healthy state, which in many cases requires post-remediation testing to confirm spore counts are within normal limits.
