Black mold in bathroom grout: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our family bathroom in our Jumeirah villa doesn’t get a lot of direct sunlight, and recently I’ve spotted black speckles growing in the grout between the wall tiles, especially behind the toilet. It’s been getting worse over the last couple of weeks with all the humidity. Is this something I need to call a professional cleaner for immediately, or is it safe to treat myself with a store-bought solution?

Black mold in bathroom grout is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small, surface-level patch, a DIY approach is often sufficient.

Start by scrubbing the affected grout with a stiff brush and a dedicated grout cleaner, or a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach. Always ensure the room is well-ventilated during this process. The key to long-term control is addressing the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet tiles and surfaces to reduce ambient humidity.

If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, if the affected area is larger than a square foot, or if you notice a persistent musty odor, a professional assessment is recommended. This indicates the moisture problem is deeper, potentially within the wall cavity. Professionals can use moisture meters to find the source and conduct air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. For villas, this is particularly important as hidden mold can affect indoor air quality throughout the home.
