Is black mold in my AC room dangerous for my newborn?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It’s been extra humid lately and we’ve been running the AC non-stop. My main concern is my newborn baby sleeping in the adjoining room. How urgently do I need to get this professionally removed, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

Black mold in an AC room is a significant concern, especially with a newborn. The primary risk for infants is not typically from a single toxic species, but from prolonged exposure to mold spores which can severely irritate their developing respiratory systems, potentially worsening allergies or asthma.

Given the UAE's high humidity and the fact that AC systems can spread spores throughout the house, a patch in a closet indicates a moisture problem that needs to be addressed at its source. For a small, visible patch (less than one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself with a dedicated mold remover or a diluted bleach solution, not vinegar, which is often ineffective on porous surfaces. However, the presence of a newborn elevates the risk, making professional assessment highly advisable.

An expert can identify the moisture source—often condensation from the AC unit, a small leak, or poor insulation—and ensure the mold hasn't spread inside the wall cavity or the AC system itself, which is common here. They will also contain the area during removal to prevent spores from dispersing into your home's air. For your baby's safety, I would recommend a professional inspection to get a complete picture of the contamination and a protocol for safe, effective removal.
