Should I move my toddler due to AC mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be constantly leaking a little water onto the carpet in the master bedroom. It's been a couple of months and now I can see a patch of black, fuzzy spots spreading out from behind the wardrobe. I'm worried about my toddler sleeping in here. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, and should I move my son out of the room right away?

Yes, you should move your toddler to another room immediately. The combination of visible black growth and a constant moisture source from your AC leak creates a high-risk environment.

In Dubai's climate, AC condensation provides the perfect breeding ground for mold, and a leak of several months has allowed a significant colony to establish itself. While not all black mold is the notorious Stachybotrys, prolonged exposure to any mold type can cause respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and worsen asthma, with children being particularly vulnerable due to their developing immune systems and smaller lung capacity.

This situation requires a professional inspection. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing the colony can aerosolize spores throughout the room. A proper remediation involves first fixing the AC leak at its source to eliminate the moisture, then a controlled containment and removal of the affected carpet and possibly sections of drywall. The remediation should be verified with post-clearance testing to ensure spore counts have returned to acceptable indoor levels. For your child's safety, keep him out of the room until this process is complete and you have confirmation the environment is safe.
