What's the fastest way to clean mold safely?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night for the past couple of weeks, and I’m starting to worry it’s from the mold. I just pulled their toys out from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold on the back wall, hidden behind the wardrobe. The humidity has been awful lately. What’s the safest and fastest way to clean this without making my kids sick from the spores?

The fastest initial step is to isolate the area. Keep the kids out of the room, close the door, and seal the gap with a damp towel to prevent spores from spreading to the rest of the house.

For a patch hidden behind furniture, the cause is almost always condensation from an exterior wall or a hidden leak. In Jumeirah villas, this is common where cool interior air from AC meets the humid exterior wall, creating a perfect breeding ground.

Safely clean small patches (under 1 square meter) with a solution of detergent and water—not bleach. Bleach doesn't kill mold roots on porous surfaces and can release harmful fumes, especially in a closed space. Scrub with the detergent solution, dry the area completely, and then disinfect with a diluted white vinegar spray. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles during cleaning.

However, given the location behind a wardrobe and the fact it was hidden, the wall's internal structure may be affected. The fastest and safest way to ensure it's resolved is a professional assessment. They can identify the moisture source—whether it's condensation, a pipe leak, or seepage—which is critical to prevent immediate regrowth. In Dubai's climate, mold will return within days if the underlying humidity issue isn't fixed. For health concerns with children, a lab test can identify the mold type and confirm the air is safe after remediation.
