Is black mold in my shower a serious problem?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been getting these black spots over the last few months, and no matter how much I scrub with bleach, it just comes back. It's a windowless bathroom in our Jumeirah Park villa, so it's always a bit damp. I'm worried it's getting worse and might be behind the walls. Should I just call in a professional mold removal company, and does anyone know what kind of cost I might be looking at for something like this?

The black spots in your shower grout are likely Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger, both common in Dubai's humid climate. In a windowless bathroom, constant moisture from showers with no ventilation creates an ideal breeding ground.

While surface mold in showers often causes minor irritations like congestion or worsened allergies, its recurrence despite bleaching suggests a deeper issue. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the root hyphae penetrating porous grout. The persistent dampness in Jumeirah Park villas, combined with year-round AC use that creates condensation, means the moisture source is constant. This raises the possibility of growth behind tiles or within wall cavities if the sealant is compromised.

For a recurring problem in a windowless bathroom, a professional inspection is advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls non-invasively. Remediation cost depends entirely on the extent of the spread. Surface-level cleaning is a straightforward service, but if the mold has penetrated the wall, it becomes a more involved project requiring tile removal and possibly addressing underlying dampness. Always request a detailed assessment and a scope of work before any procedure begins.
