How to prevent black mold in closet from returning?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles appearing in the corners of our master bedroom closet. It's an interior wall and we keep a lot of clothes in there, so I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped. I run the AC constantly but it's clearly not enough. What's the most effective way to prevent this mold from spreading and coming back?

Black mold in closets is common here due to our high humidity, even with constant AC. The issue is stagnant, moist air trapped among your clothes against a cool interior wall, creating a perfect environment for mold.

Start by addressing the current growth. For a small area, clean it with a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner, wearing a mask. Discard any moldy items that can't be thoroughly cleaned, like porous fabrics or cardboard boxes. The key to prevention is controlling humidity and improving airflow. Leave some space between your clothes and the wall. Avoid overpacking the closet, as this restricts air circulation. Consider using a moisture absorber like silica gel or a small, quiet dehumidifier designed for closet spaces.

For the long term, your AC may not be effectively dehumidifying the entire room. Ensure the bedroom door isn't always closed, allowing cooler, drier air from the main room to circulate into the closet. Check that the AC vent isn't blocked and that the unit is serviced regularly to maintain its drying capacity. If the problem persists or covers a large area, a professional inspection can identify the specific mold type and underlying moisture source, which is crucial for a permanent solution.
